Rhinebeck Recap 2024

Writer's picture: Nicole MichaelNicole Michael

Ah, Rhinebeck - the NY Sheep and Wool Festival. As someone recently(ish) transplanted to the Northeast, this festival was something I was very excited to experience for myself. And I can say, I now get the hype. It's more than a fabulous fiber festival with amazing vendors, fall foliage, and fair snacks. It's a time to show off your makes, meet online friends, and connect with people who are just as excited as you are for your craft. I had the privilege of doing all of these things as well as picking up some pretty great yarn. Here's what I did, and some lessons I learned!

The first thing I did was make my Rhinebeck sweater. I originally planned on attending one day (Saturday) and only made one sweater. I ended up wearing it both days and am so glad I did! It was truly a masterpiece of my own design, made up of 192 solid granny squares, and assembled in a quilt pattern. Quilt motifs were VERY on trend this year and I got so many compliments on it. I also really wanted to wear something eye-catching in crochet, and it was so nice to have so much praise for crochet! I used Happy Place yarn (50% cotton/50% wool) by Hobbii x TL Yarncrafts and it was the perfect choice for his project. I also made a little coordinating vest for MJ and Vaughn wore the Tunisian sweater I made him for Christmas.

We did the weekend with my sister Aaron and her amazing fiancée Chelsea, and Chelsea made cardigans for both of them - her first wearables EVER. She even got to meet Alexi of Two of Wands who collaborated with Lion brand to create the yarn she used. How cool is that?!

As a cute little family, we started our day Saturday with a little sweater photoshoot at our AirBnB and then got to the fairgrounds around noon. Y'all, that traffic on Saturday was no joke! We had traffic getting into the fairgrounds, and lots of traffic leaving (even though we left at 4:30). Lesson learned- budget lots of extra time for travel and have a good car project with you!

On Saturday, we spent a chunk of time on the hill meeting yarny celebs (Hi Knitty Natty and Ashleigh of Sewrella!) as well as meeting some designers I've tested for and making new friends. We also snagged some delightful local cheese, some alpaca socks, said hey to some animals, and ultimately

ended the day having purchased NO yarn. WHAT?? I know, I know, but after seeing the crowds on Saturday and taking in Rhinebeck, we were honestly ready to make our dinner rezzi in Kingston and tuck in for an early night. Since we didn't have any firm plans on Sunday, we decided during the day on Saturday that we would come back the next day and I'm so glad we did. I had heard that Sunday is the better day to attend if you want a chill Rhinebeck experience and I would agree. We were able to take our time in the vendor booths, get some souvenirs from the tent (not the totes though, they sold out of those the first day), and most importantly meet up with buddies we had missed on Saturday. I am so grateful that I was able to meet these online friends in person- every single one of them was more lovely in person than online.

We ended our time with some yarn purchases, a last group picture, and a baby who was very ready for a nap. I am so glad I was able to make this trip with this group, an can't wait for another fun fiber adventure. Until next time!
