I love a scrappy project - especially a scrappy project where I can use leftovers of beautiful hand dyed yarn from bigger projects. When I began making these little fancy linen squares, I wasn’t sure what they would become. A table runner? A small blanket? A wrap? However, during this project I found out I was pregnant!! Very happy news indeed for our family. It was easy to decide then with all these beautiful bright colors, that these squares needed to become a blanket for our little girl. And I knew I needed to share it! S, here’s what I did to create my version of this small baby blanket. Let me know in the comments below how you would use these cute little squares!
Blanket Details
Finished dimensions – 28” x 23” (blocked)
42 total squares
Border with 7 rounds of linen stitch and 1 round of reverse sc
What You’ll Need:
Size F Hook (3.75mm)
Fingering weight yarn
Per square around 17 yds/4 g
For entire blanket 875 yds/215 g (42 squares + border)
Scissors
To make the squares:
For each square, I made a fancy linen stitch square (https://youtu.be/r30l4WM-gXo) with 6 rounds of linen stich, 1 round of dc + ch1, and 3 more rounds linen stitch.
Assembly:
At the end of each square, I left a long tail for seaming the ends together. I seamed each square together using the whip stitch in the back loop of each square.
Border:
After all the squares were seamed together, I attached my border yarn with the right side facing me. I then worked a linen stich border around the entire blanket, adding a ch 1, sc, ch1 on the seams where the squares meet. I crocheted a total of 7 rounds of linen stitch on the border, ending with a reverse sc in every ch sp (also included in the Fancy Linen Stitch Tutorial).
Blocking:
I always black my finished projects, especially with a fiber like wool that eases into place after a soak. I chose to wait until the entire project was finished to block it, but you could also block the individual squares before seaming them together for a uniform size. To block, simply soak in wool wash and water for 20 minutes, then lay flat on a towel to dry.
