Let’s face it, hand dyed yarn is STUNNING, but it is a luxury. That’s not a knock on the dyers, they have put in hard work to create amazing colorways, and the value of the work is reflected in the price of the yarn. So when does it make sense to splurge, and when does it make sense to shop at a big-box store? Let’s find out!

For really special wearables, like shawls and sometimes sweaters, I love to use hand-dyed yarn. I try to spread out these projects so the cost of each item is manageable. Make sure to think through how you are going to care for these items, since some hand-dyed yarns require hand washing and laying flat to dry. While this is usually feasible with a shawl, it might not be the best fit for an everyday cardigan. Here are some of my favorite pieces with hand-dyed yarn!

For items that are going to get a lot of use, I use budget friendly yarn. These yarns typically are made from acrylic, cotton, or a blend and are commercially dyed. I always use these types of yarns for baby items so that new parents can throw these items in the wash without worry. Most acrylic will soften in the washer and dryer, and will be perfect for items that you use everyday. Here are a few of my favorite projects using budget friendly yarn!
